Sometimes learners struggle to go from reading simple one-syllable words to longer words. If learners know how to read one-syllable 1- closed syllables like kit or ten, 2- open syllable words like no and he, and 3- r-controlled syllables like part or hurt, they are ready to apply that knowledge to longer words. Some examples are hardly, broken down as hard-ly or party, broken down as par-ty.

These printable and digital cards give learners practice breaking apart two-syllable words that have r-controlled syllables, either in their first syllable, in their last syllable, or in both syllables.

Use these break it down cards to give your learners practice with dividing and reading words. The cards are available in THREE formats, so you can pick the one(s) that work best for you and your learners.

1. Google Slides – A link in the PDF is provided for 20 self-checking digital cards plus directions on how to assign them to Microsoft OneDrive
2. Seesaw – A link in the PDF is provided for 20 self-checking digital cards
3. Printable Cards – 20 cards {color and blackline}, a printable recording sheet, and printable answer key

 

 

On each card, learners are asked to:

1. Look at the word
2. Examine the word’s syllables
3. Break the word down into its syllables -> 1st syllable {either closed, open, or r-controlled} + 2nd syllable {either closed, open, or r-controlled}
4. Write the word in a sentence

All digital and printable cards are SELF-CHECKING! In Google Slides and Seesaw, learners can drag a box over to check their answers and read a sample sentence. Just print the answer key for learners to check their work if you’re using the printable cards.
