Sometimes learners struggle to go from reading simple one-syllable words to longer words. If learners know how to read one-syllable words with long vowel teams, they are ready to apply that knowledge to longer words. Teapot, rainbow, and towboat are examples of longer words that contain long vowel team syllables.

These printable and digital cards give learners practice breaking apart two-syllable words that have the long vowel teams of ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, ow, oo, or ew either in their first syllable, in their last/second syllable, or in both syllables.

Use these break it down cards to give your learners practice with dividing and reading words. The cards are available in THREE formats, so you can pick the one(s) that work best for you and your learners.

On each card, learners are asked to:

1. Look at the word
2. Examine the word’s syllables
3. Break the word down into its syllables -> 1st syllable {either closed, open, r-controlled, or a long vowel team} + 2nd syllable {either closed, open, r-controlled, or a long vowel team}
4. Write the word in a sentence

All digital and printable cards are SELF-CHECKING! In Google Slides and Seesaw, learners can drag a box over to check their answers and read a sample sentence. Just print the answer key for learners to check their work if you’re using the printable cards.
