Let’s Break it Down ~ Latin Stem Cards

Many words and/or parts of words in the English language derive from Latin. In order for our learners to read and understand word meanings, teaching Latin stems, especially the more common ones, is imperative.

Latin stems are not the same thing as “base words” because Latin stems are just word parts, not typically stand-alone words. For example, aud is the Latin stem in audible, but it is not a stand-alone word.

Latin stems are a little more predictable in nature than Greek roots. Latin stems, on the contrary, tend to act as the “base word” in most words. Greek roots can act as a prefix, “base word,” or suffix in a word. For example, biology is made of two Greek roots: bio and ology or logy, with the ology part acting as a suffix.

The Latin stems covered in this digital and printable resource are ten of the most common stems, including: audi, dict, ject, port, rupt, scrib/script, spect, struct, tract, and vis.

On each Latin Stem Card, learners are asked to:

1. Look at the word.
2. Examine the word parts.
3. Break the word down into its word parts -> prefix + Latin Stem + suffix
4. Write a definition of the word
5. Write the word in a sentence

All digital and printable cards are SELF-CHECKING! In Google Slides and Seesaw, learners can drag a box over to check their answers and read a sample sentence. Just print the answer key for learners to check their work if you’re using the printable cards.
