Let’s Break it Down ~ Greek Root Cards

Many words and/or parts of words in the English language derive from Greek. In order for our learners to read and understand word meanings, teaching Greek roots, especially the more common ones, is imperative.

Greek roots are more versatile in nature than Latin stems. Greek roots can act as stand-alone words, such as meter, scope, and sphere. They can also act as a prefix, “base word,” or suffix in a word. For example, biology is made of two Greek roots: bio and ology or logy, with the ology part acting as a suffix.

Latin stems are a little more predictable in nature than Greek roots. Latin stems tend to only act as the “base word” in most words.

This resource covers around the most common Greek roots including: auto, bio, graph, hydr, geo, meter, logy/ology, phon/ phone, photo, scope, sphere, tele, therm/therma/thermo, and zo/zoo.

On each Greek Root Card, learners are asked to:

1. Look at the word.
2. Examine the word parts.
3. Break the word down into its word parts -> Greek Root(s) + Other Word Parts, such as prefixes or suffixes
4. Write a definition of the word
5. Write the word in a sentence

All digital and printable cards are SELF-CHECKING! In Google Slides and Seesaw, learners can drag a box over to check their answers and read a sample sentence. Just print the answer key for learners to check their work if you’re using the printable cards.
