The Sacrifice of Our Savior
My kids often tell me I sound like a broken record because I repeatedly say that the Bible tells one story, but it’s true! The Bible is God’s story of the sin of humanity being redeemed and rescued by the Greatest Hero, God Himself in the Person of Jesus Christ.
Many believers desire to understand this story by reading the Bible through in a year. This is such a wonderful goal to have! As we read Genesis, Exodus, and the trials of Job, we may be fairly familiar with most of these stories, especially if we grew up in church.
But something tends to happen to our stamina towards the end of Exodus and into Leviticus. It’s here that we get into the nitty-gritty of the Mosaic law. We read about the tabernacle, the offerings, the sacrifices, the feasts, and the festivals.
Often, one of three things happens.
- We skim-read these parts just to get through them. Meanwhile, we’re thinking about other things like what’s on our “to-do” list for the day.
- We may skip these chapters and/or books altogether. After all, these laws, offerings, and sacrifices don’t apply to us anymore, so why should we attempt to understand them?
- Lastly, we may stop our reading plan and tell ourselves we’ll try reading through the Bible again next year.
In His sovereignty, God purposely placed Exodus and Leviticus in the Bible. I’m sure you’d agree with a hardy, “Amen!” But what if I told you that God also filled these chapters {we’re so tempted to skim or skip} with pictures, types, and shadows of the ultimate sacrifice of our Savior? From the beginning, God desired to point us to our greatest need, and that is a Perfect and Permanent Sacrifice to wash away our sin…forever. {Hebrews 7:27}

The Easter season is such a great time to study how the Old Testament gives us pictures of Jesus’ death and resurrection. May our hearts be ever-thankful for what Jesus did on our behalf. It’s only because of His atoning sacrifice on the cross that we have true communion with the Father.
This study is split into four weeks leading up to Resurrection Sunday, with five days for each week. It can be done as a self-study {high school and up} or with your children {ages 6th grade+}.
Each day includes Scripture verses to read and then a study on how Christ is the fulfillment of the sacrifice from the Old Testament.
