Description
Solving word problems. Just that phrase alone makes me want to say, “Yuck!” I’m sure you have learners who feel the same exact way.
Perhaps you feel that way about teaching kids how to solve word problems.
Solving Word Problems with STEPS
Teaching the steps and strategies of word problems can feel overwhelming. This is especially true when you add on top of that struggling learners who don’t understand math concepts and/or reading comprehension.
How can you make your teaching explicit and systematic? That’s where STEPS comes in!
The main STEPS in this pack include:
S – STUDY the question. What are you being asked to do?
T – TAKE TIME to carefully read the problem. Look for key words and key concepts.
E – EVALUATE the strategies and steps needed to solve the problem. ELIMINATE any extra information.
P – PICK and try a strategy to solve the problem. {Sometimes learners must use more than one strategy to solve a problem, too!}
S – Does your answer make SENSE? Check your answer!
