Today, I’m sharing a rainbow writing activity with a little twist…Rainbow Roll & Write Sight Words!

If you’ve scoured the internet for sight word ideas or taught in the younger grades, you know that getting kids to rainbow write spelling words is nothing new. But rolling a die before writing is the twist!

What exactly are Sight Words?

Another term for “sight words” are high frequency words. These are words learners see often enough in their reading and used often enough in their writing that we want them to be known by sight {or memorized}.

This DOES NOT MEAN we teach them as whole words simply to be memorized. As we introduce these words, we want to help learners see how their phonics skills can apply to these words.

Some sight words, such as can or like, follow the phonics generalizations {or rules} perfectly. Other sight words, such as said or two, do not.

But just because a PART of the word is tricky doesn’t mean the entire word just has to be memorzied. No! We can talk about the parts of the word that DO follow the phonics rules and then teach them to memorize just the tricky part/parts.

For example, in the word said, the s and the d make their expected sounds. These are already familiar to learners, and learners can use their phonics knowledge to decode this part of the word. The ai in the middle does not follow the expected sound of long a, and is the trickier part of the word {or the “heart” part of the word}.

 

Rainbow Roll & Write Sight Words

Once learners understand the “easy” and “tricky” parts of a particular sight word, the fun can really begin as they practice sight words in various ways. One way to practice is by writing them, hence these Rainbow Roll & Write Sight Word Mats!

Learners use these pages to rainbow write 300+ different sight words! These high frequency words are combined from several high frequency word lists including, but not limited to:

• Fry
• Dolch
• Blevins
• Shaywitz
• UFLI’s “heart words
