Learn to Read: Short a Word Families {Unit 1}

Welcome to Unit 1 of Learn to Read, a reading curriculum build around short vowel family words and sight words!

Unit 1 includes four short a lessons that last five days each. {It is important that while there is a 5-day lesson plan accompanying each lesson, there is complete flexibility with using these activities.}

 

**DIGITAL UPDATE 2020: All the short a books in this unit have formatted for digital reading! Landscape PDFs are included as well as links to Google Slides for the readers in this unit. Read how to upload the PDF books to Seesaw here.

 

A Look at Each Lesson from Unit 1:

Each lesson has 25 or more activities that center around a different short a word family and 2 beginning sight words {from List A/List B}. All activities come in color and black/white! Most of the activities are NO PREP and easy to implement. Only a few basic teaching supplies are really needed to teach with it.

Here’s a quick run-down of the word families and sight words* included for Short a/Unit 1:

Lesson 1- AT word family / sight words: come, on {61 pages}

Lesson 2- AD word family / sight words: make, said {62 pages}

Lesson 3- AN word family / sight words: where, find {62 pages}

Lesson 4- word family review / sight words: away, with / PLUS: sight word review activities & short a extension activities {93 pages}

*All readers/lessons include review sight words, which come from Reading the Alphabet.
