Description
Phonemic awareness is an important skill for readers and writers. It’s the ability to hear individual sounds in words. And when learners can hear each sound, they begin to be able to isolate individual sounds, separate the sounds, and blend the sounds.
Beginning Sounds Phonemic Awareness Cards
The goal with these beginning sounds phonemic awareness cards is to have learners listen for and identify the SOUND(S) they hear, not necessarily give the letter name(s). For example, instead of saying that spoon starts with s–p, we want learners to isolate and make the actual sounds of s & p–> /s/-/p/.
It doesn’t hurt if learners also identify the letter names, but this can prove to be rather difficult with words like knife {sounds like n} or wheelbarrow {can sound like just a w}.
For each card, just read the prompt at the top, name each picture, then ask the learner for the beginning sound(s).
