Description
Some learners struggle to retell both fiction and nonfiction. Some readers share too many details, making a retelling confusing while others might not share enough, making it difficult to understand even the main idea.
This Retelling Bundle for BOTH fiction and nonfiction is so helpful for learners of all ages! Both of these packs can be purchased on their own, but bundle saves you money!
Fiction Retelling with SCOOP
The acronym S.C.O.O.P. {as in ice cream scoop} will help kids know the important elements that need to be included in a story retelling.
SCOOP is such a fun way to help kids know what they need to include when they retell a story! SCOOP gives kids a visual reminder when it’s time to retell fiction.
S.C.O.O.P. stands for:
- Setting – WHEN and WHERE the story takes place
- Characters – WHO is in the story? {usually people or animals}
- Oh no! – There’s a problem!
- Order of Events – retell the events of the story in order
- Problem Solved – How is the problem solved or fixed?
Nonfiction Retelling with MUSH
The acronym M.U.S.H. can help learners process and organize the retelling of a nonfiction text.
Retelling nonfiction isn’t often as nice and neat as retelling fiction. Often, learners get bogged down in all the information presented in a nonfiction text. And when you factor in text structure, learners can begin to feel their brains turning into mush!
M.U.S.H. stands for:
- Main Idea – What is the text mostly about? Do you see details that support this topic?
- Uncover the Purpose – Why did the author write the text?
- Structure – What’s the text structure. This helps learners format their retellings.
- Helps – Text features are included to help learners find what’s important. Use them!
